Better to Light a Candle ... Dig This

… than curse the darkness.

We have all sorts of dazzling candles and candleholders, including some eco-friendly flameless candles that flicker and glow – some that even turn themselves on and off.

These log vases are really lovely. The hollow “log-shaped” vase holds water and flowers, plus candles.

Besides candles, this is the time of year when Dig This carries beautiful seasonal table linens to brighten your dining table over the holiday season. If you want your home to glow and sparkle over the holidays, we have what you need.

What to do in the Garden in November
  •  November is the best month to plant fruit trees and other deciduous plants. See Virginia's article in our October newsletter for more information. http://www.digthis.com/newsletterarchive

  • Keep your lawn free of leaves: unsmothered lawns build better root systems. We have a wide variety of rakes for just this purpose. And we still have some leaf mulchers left that can turn your leaves into fine garden mulch in minutes!

  • Sow your early peas and broad beans now for harvest in June.

  • Plant fall rye and green crops are planted now to turn under in the spring.

  • It is not too late to plant your spring bulbs. In fact, you can plant spring flowering bulbs in our climate right into January. Fortunately we still have a good assortment of bulbs to choose from, and they are now 40% off the regular price.

  • If you are bugged by the thought of bringing in insects along with your potted Christmas tree or stash of pinecones that were left in the shed all summer long, just use some 100% natural Neem oil on the soil surface of your plant, or lightly sprayed onto your pinecones. The insects who thought they’d be living in your home will choose to evacuate the area very quickly.

  • Strip leaves from rose bushes and dispose in the garbage. Do not put into your compost.

  • Prune any long branches on trees and shrubs which might be damaged by winter winds.

  • Drain your sprinklers and put away hoses for the winter.

  • Weed your perennial beds and mulch.

  • Empty bird baths and fountains, and either cover or turn the bowls over so rain water doesn't collect and freeze in the bowls. Make sure you haven't left any pots out that might collect rain water and freeze. They are sure to break.

  • Plant indoor bulbs for the holiday season. You can grow Paperwhites in stones and water, but Amaryllis do better in soil.

  • November is a great month to record your garden’s interesting details. You can stand back and really see the “bones” of your garden and contemplate what needs changing for next year. A gardener’s journal is perfect for doing this.

On a Sadder Note

We lost a dear friend this month. Rod Parkhurst, Virginia's husband and partner, passed away on November 12th. We will all miss Rod's sense of humour and his friendly face in our stores.

Product Spotlight Make Rain Beautiful Product Spotlight

With fall, comes rain. Why not replace your ugly downspout with a rain chain, like our customer, Steve Goldberg, has done at his home.

Originating hundreds of years ago in Japan, Rain Chains act as linked funnels that guide rainwater from the roof to the ground. They are the decorative alternative to a cheerless gutter downspout.

Thanks, Steve, for sharing this photo with us.

Some See Leaves, I See Mulch Product Spotlight

As I drive around Victoria I see piles of leaves at the curbside and think “MULCH”!

We have three leaf mulchers left: two in Sidney and one at Broadmead. This is the best mulcher on the market. It will turn 11 bags of leaves to 1 bag of fine garden mulch that you can spread on your beds or add to your compost.
